Over 5 years of surveillance of 992 patients with benign thyroid nodules, 88.3% had no change in nodule number and 69.0% had no change in size; only 0.7% (7 patients) were diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and nodule growth was not a reliable indicator of malignancy (only 3 of 7 cancers had nodule growth).
